Aeolian Pianola

The Aeolian Company firm made a couple of “push-ups” as they were called in English, the 65-note Pianola being the most produced one. Some versions of the 65-note push-up were made that could also play 58-note aeolian organ rolls. Later on Aeolian began to produce 65/88-note push-ups that could play both Aeolian's 65-note rolls and the standardized full scale 88-note rolls. only a few 88-note-only push-ups where created. Sales of push-ups dropped rapidly when the pianola action was built into the pianos' case, making the rather bulky piece of equipment unnecessary.

Most (if not all?) 88-note and 88/65-note push-ups were Themodist, that means they contained a mechanism that could accent certain notes in the music by means of special perforations in the music rolls to bring out the melody.
